Give your front door some kerb appeal with a step-by-step guide on how to paint a wooden door.

Painting your front door is the most effective way to lift both your own mood and the look of your house. In terms of a project, it’s a lot less time consuming and expensive than re-painting your entire home. Regardless of which system or type of paint you are using it is essential that you thoroughly prepare the surface first. Always allow sufficient drying time between coats (check the can for details).

For a guide on how to paint a UPVC/PVC door, follow our step-by-step guide here.

Step 1

Wash the surface with sugar soap, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

Step 2

Remove any loose, flaking or defective paint by scraping and sanding the door surface thoroughly to create a rough surface, known as a key. Repair any damage using suitable filler. The surface must be clean and dry.

Step 3

Remove or mask off door furniture (knocker, handle, number etc).

Step 4

Apply one coat of Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear to all bare wood. Fill any holes, cracks or imperfections with an appropriate wood filler and sand smooth.

Step 5

Apply one coat of Dulux Weathershield Exterior Undercoat to all bare areas followed by one coat all over, using an acrylic bristle brush.

Step 6

Finish by applying one or two coats of your preferred top-coat in your chosen colour. Leave to dry for four hours before you apply the second coat.
