Give your front door some kerb appeal with a step by step guide on how to paint a wooden door.

Regardless of which system or type of paint you are using it is essential that you thoroughly prepare the surface first.

  1. Remove or mask off door furniture (knocker, handle, number etc) 

  2. Wash the surface with sugar soap, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

  3. Remove any loose, flaking or defective paint by scraping and sanding

  4. Apply one coat of Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear to all bare wood

  5. Fill any holes, cracks or imperfections with an appropriate wood filler and sand smooth

  6. Apply one coat of Dulux Weathershield Exterior Undercoat to all bare areas followed by one coat all over.

  7. Apply one or two coats of your chosen finish – 

    1. Dulux Weathershield Exterior Satin or Gloss, available in over 150 colours to choose from in our Weathershield fandeck available to mix instore OR

    2.  Dulux Weathershield Exterior Satinwood (available in 15 popular ready mixed colours. See Weathershield colour card for details) 

Always allow sufficient drying time between coats – check can for details

Step 1

Begin sanding the door surface thoroughly to create a rough surface known as a key. Repair any damage using suitable filler. surface must be clean and dry

Step 2

Remove any door furniture and use masking tape to cover any elements that have to stay put. 

Step 3

Apply one coat of Dulux Weathershield Quick Dry Exterior Undercoat for excellent coverage using an acrylic bristle brush.

Step 4

For a water-based finish, use Dulux Weathershield Exterior Satinwood, Dulux Weathershield Quick Drying Exterior Gloss or Exterior Satin. All are low odour, acrylic-based and better for the environment

Step 5

Finish by applying two coats of your preferred top coat in your chosen colour. Leave to dry for four hours before you apply the second coat.
